Does the PIP form deadline stop over Christmas? No. Your PIP2 or review form still has to go back by the date on your letter, usually within 1 month, but you can ask the PIP enquiry line for more time. The key is to ask before the phone lines close for the bank holidays.

Christmas does not pause the PIP timetable. If your "How your disability affects you" form (the PIP2) or your review form arrives in December, you still have the same deadline printed on your letter, normally 1 month. The DWP does not add extra days because of the bank holidays, and the clock does not stop while offices are closed.
The good news is that the rules give you a way out if you need it. GOV.UK says you can contact the PIP enquiry line if you need more time, and the same applies to the review form. The trick at Christmas is simply to ask early, before the phone lines close for the bank holidays, rather than in the last few days of December.
This guide covers everything that changes, and everything that does not, between mid December and early January: forms, reviews, assessments, mandatory reconsideration, appeals, payments and the £10 Christmas Bonus.
Key Dates for Christmas 2026
These are the bank holidays in England and Wales over the festive period, taken from GOV.UK:
| Date | Day | Bank holiday |
|---|---|---|
| 25 December 2026 | Friday | Christmas Day |
| 28 December 2026 | Monday | Boxing Day (substitute day) |
| 1 January 2027 | Friday | New Year's Day |
The PIP phone lines publish these opening hours on GOV.UK:
- PIP enquiry line (existing claims, forms, more time, changes): 0800 121 4433, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
- PIP new claims line (starting a claim): 0800 917 2222, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
Both lines are weekday services, so in practice you have very few working days between 24 December and 4 January. Check GOV.UK in December in case the hours change, and plan any calls for the week before Christmas.
If Your PIP2 Form Arrives in December
After you start a claim by phone, the DWP sends the "How your disability affects you" form. GOV.UK says you can usually complete it online if you applied by phone (you are emailed a link after the call), or by post, and that you should return it within 1 month.
A form that lands on 10 December therefore needs to be back around 10 January, even though a week of that time is lost to the holidays. If you want to use the full month, that is fine, but do three things straight away:
- Write the return date on the front of the form or in your phone, so it does not get lost in the Christmas post.
- Ask your GP or care team for evidence now. Surgeries and hospital teams often run reduced services over the holidays, so a request made in January may not come back in time.
- Decide early whether you need more time. If you do, call the enquiry line before the bank holidays, not after.
The form itself is the same in December as at any other time of year. It scores how your conditions affect 12 activities on most days, judged on whether you can do each one safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and in a reasonable time. Our guide to how long the PIP process takes explains what happens after you send it.
How to Ask for More Time
GOV.UK says to contact the PIP enquiry line if you need more time to return your form. A few practical points make the call easier:
- Have your National Insurance number ready, together with the letter that came with the form.
- Give a short, honest reason, for example that you are waiting for a letter from your consultant, that you have been unwell or that the holidays mean you cannot get help with the form until January.
- Ask what the new date is and write it down, with the date and time of the call and the name of the person you spoke to if they give it.
- Do not let the deadline pass silently. If you cannot get through before Christmas, keep trying on the next working day and keep a note of every attempt.
If the form is already late, send it anyway as soon as you can, and call to explain why. A late form with an explanation is far better than no form at all.
Review Forms Over Christmas
If you already get PIP and a review form arrives (GOV.UK calls it the "Personal Independence Payment Review" form), the same rules apply: you need to return it within 1 month, and you can contact the PIP enquiry line if you need more time.
GOV.UK is clear that you continue to get PIP while your claim is being reviewed, so a review over Christmas does not stop your payments. What matters is describing how things are for you now, including anything that has changed. Our PIP review form tips walk through the questions, and how long a PIP review takes explains the timescales.
PIP Assessments in December
Assessments are arranged by the assessment provider, not the DWP itself, and they can be booked on any working day, including the run-up to Christmas. If you receive an appointment you cannot attend, contact the provider using the details on your invitation letter as soon as possible and ask for a new date.
Do not simply miss the appointment. Missing an assessment without a good reason can lead to your claim being refused, which would mean starting again or challenging the decision. If you have to cancel because you are ill, keep a note of the call and any evidence of the illness.
Many assessments now take place by phone or video. If yours is in December, plan where you will take the call, who can be with you and what you want to make sure you say, just as you would at any other time of year.
Mandatory Reconsideration and Appeal Deadlines
A decision letter that arrives in December is one of the easiest things to lose track of over the holidays, and the deadline to challenge it does not move.
- Mandatory reconsideration: GOV.UK says you usually need to ask within one month of the date of the decision. You can ask after one month if you have a good reason, for example if you have been in hospital or had a bereavement, but you must explain why your request is late.
- Appeal to a tribunal: if the reconsideration does not change the decision, GOV.UK says to appeal within one month of the mandatory reconsideration notice.
Note the date on the letter, not the date it reached you, because the month runs from the decision date. If a letter dated in early December only arrives just before Christmas, act on it straight away and keep the envelope. Our guides to mandatory reconsideration and the PIP tribunal explain each step.
Payments and the £10 Christmas Bonus
PIP is paid every 4 weeks. GOV.UK says that if your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday, you will usually be paid on the working day before. So a payment due on 25 or 28 December 2026, or on 1 January 2027, should normally arrive early rather than late. We cover the dates in detail in our PIP payment dates 2026 guide.
PIP is also one of the benefits that qualifies for the Christmas Bonus, a one-off, tax-free £10 payment. You need to get a qualifying benefit in the "qualifying week", which GOV.UK says is normally the first full week of December. You do not need to claim it, as it should be paid automatically.
Posting Forms and Evidence at Christmas
December is the busiest month of the year for the post, and post offices close on the bank holidays. If you are sending your form by post:
- Post it early, ideally well before the last week of December, and do not leave it to the deadline day.
- Ask for a free certificate of posting at the post office, or use a tracked service, so you can prove when it went.
- Keep copies of every page you send, including evidence, in case anything goes missing.
- Write your name and National Insurance number on every extra sheet and every piece of evidence.
If you were given the online option for your form, using it avoids the Christmas post entirely.
A Simple December Plan
If you have anything PIP-related on the go this December, this short plan keeps you safe:
- Find every PIP letter you have received and write down each deadline in one place.
- Count back from each deadline and mark the last working day you could call the enquiry line.
- Request any medical evidence this week, not in January.
- If you need more time, call before the bank holidays and note what you are told.
- Post anything well before Christmas, with proof of posting, or use the online form.
Christmas is a hard time to deal with forms, especially if you are unwell or caring for someone. A little planning in early December means the holidays do not cost you your claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the PIP form deadline stop over Christmas?

Can I get more time to send my PIP form?
Yes. GOV.UK says to contact the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433 if you need more time to return your form. Give a short reason, ask for the new date and write down when you called.
Is the PIP enquiry line open over Christmas?
The published hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The bank holidays in England and Wales are 25 December, 28 December 2026 and 1 January 2027, so plan your call for the week before Christmas and check GOV.UK for any changes.
Will my PIP payment be early at Christmas?
Usually only if your payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday. GOV.UK says you will usually be paid on the working day before. Our PIP payment dates 2026 guide covers the Christmas dates.
Do I get the Christmas Bonus with PIP?
Yes. PIP is a qualifying benefit for the £10 tax-free Christmas Bonus. You need to get it in the qualifying week, normally the first full week of December, and it is paid automatically.
What if my mandatory reconsideration deadline falls over Christmas?
The deadline does not move. You usually need to ask within one month of the date of the decision. You can ask later with a good reason, such as being in hospital or a bereavement, but you must explain why your request is late.
Can I have a PIP assessment in December?
Yes. Assessments can be booked on any working day. If you cannot attend, contact the assessment provider using the details on your invitation letter as soon as possible, because missing an assessment without a good reason can lead to your claim being refused.
