In 2026, the average PIP claim takes 20 weeks from registration to decision - up from 16 weeks in 2025. Some claims are decided faster, some take much longer. Here's what to expect at each stage and what you can do to avoid delays.
The PIP Timeline
Week 1: Initial Phone Call
You call 0800 917 2222 to start your claim. This takes about 20 minutes. The DWP asks basic questions about your identity, conditions, and GP. Your claim date starts from this call - this matters because back payments are calculated from this date.
Weeks 1-3: PIP2 Form Arrives
The "How Your Disability Affects You" form (PIP2) arrives by post within 1-2 weeks. You have one month to complete and return it. Don't rush, but don't leave it until the last day either. If you need more time, call and ask for an extension before the deadline.
Weeks 4-12: Waiting for Assessment
This is the longest wait. The DWP sends your form to an assessment provider (Capita or Atos) who schedules your assessment. From April 2026, the DWP targets 30% face-to-face assessments, up from the pandemic era when nearly all were by phone.
You may receive a decision without an assessment if your evidence is strong enough. This is called a "paper-based decision" and it's the fastest route.
Weeks 12-16: Assessment
Your assessment (phone, video, or face-to-face) takes 45-60 minutes. The assessor writes a report and sends it to the DWP.
Weeks 16-20: Decision
A DWP decision maker reviews the assessment report, your PIP2 form, and any evidence. They make the final decision and send you a letter.
What Causes Delays?
- Incomplete forms - leaving boxes blank or not providing enough detail means the DWP requests more information
- Missing evidence - if the DWP contacts your GP and they don't respond quickly, everything pauses
- Assessment backlogs - some areas have longer waits than others
- Returning your form late - if you miss the one-month deadline, your claim may be closed
How to Speed Things Up
Submit evidence with your form. Don't wait for the DWP to contact your GP. Get letters from your GP, consultants, and other professionals before you return the form and include them.
Fill in every box. A complete, detailed form is less likely to need follow-up.
Answer the phone. The assessment provider will try to call you to schedule your assessment. If they can't reach you, you go to the back of the queue.
Can I Claim Other Benefits While Waiting?
Yes. You can claim Universal Credit, ESA, and other benefits while waiting for your PIP decision. PIP will be paid on top of these if you're awarded it, and your back payment will cover the period from your initial claim.
