What to Say at Your PIP Assessment - Expert Guide 2026

Updated March 2026 · 8 min read · By PIPexpert

The PIP assessment is where many claims are won or lost. Whether face-to-face or by telephone, the questions are designed to test how your condition affects daily life - and the way you answer matters enormously.

Before the Assessment

⚠ Important: The assessment starts from the moment you arrive. The assessor may note how you walked in, sat down, and made eye contact. Be yourself - don't hide your difficulties.

The "Casual" Questions That Aren't Casual

Assessors start with seemingly casual questions. These are carefully designed to score specific PIP activities:

"What did you have for breakfast today?" - This tests Activity 1 (Preparing Food). If you say "I had toast and tea" without explaining who made it and why you couldn't, you've just scored 0 on food preparation.

"How did you get here today?" - This tests Activities 11 and 12 (Mobility). A brief answer like "my husband drove me" misses the chance to explain WHY you can't travel alone.

"Do you go out socially?" - This tests Activity 9 (Engaging with People). Saying "occasionally I see friends" suggests you can engage socially without difficulty.

Every one of these questions has a specific PIP activity behind it. Knowing which activity is being tested - and what the high-scoring descriptors say - allows you to answer in a way that accurately reflects your difficulties.

Phrases That Hurt Your Claim

These phrases feel natural and honest - but they actively work against you. There are better ways to describe the same reality that accurately convey your difficulties without underselling them.

Phone Assessment Tips

Most PIP assessments are now by telephone. Keep your PIP2 form and notes in front of you, ask for the call to be recorded, take your time with answers, and have someone with you for support. If you're having a bad day, tell the assessor - that IS the reality of your condition.

After the Assessment

You'll receive a decision within 4-8 weeks. If turned down, don't give up. Request a Mandatory Reconsideration within one month (around 1 in 3 result in a changed decision). If that fails, appeal to tribunal - around two thirds of PIP appeals are decided in the claimant's favour.

Don't Risk Your PIP Claim

The difference between 0 points and enhanced rate often comes down to the exact words you use. PIPexpert writes them for you - personalised to your conditions, ready in minutes.
