PIP Renewal - What to Expect in 2026

Updated May 2026 · 7 min read · By PIPexpert

If you already receive PIP, your award will be reviewed at some point. The date is shown on your decision letter - usually 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 years from the original award date. Here is what to expect and how to prepare.

When Does the Review Happen?

The DWP will send you a review form (PIP2R) approximately 9-12 months before your award end date. Your payments continue throughout the review process. You will not lose your PIP while the review is being processed.

What Form Do You Fill In?

The review form is almost identical to the original PIP2 form. It asks about all 12 activities. Fill it in describing your CURRENT situation, not how you were when you first claimed. If your condition has worsened, say so clearly.

Will I Need Another Assessment?

Possibly but not always. Some reviews are decided on paper without an assessment, especially if your condition is stable or has worsened and the evidence is clear. Others require a phone or face-to-face assessment.

How to Keep Your Award

1. Fill in the form thoroughly. Do not write "same as before" or "see previous form." The decision maker may not have your previous form. Describe everything from scratch.

2. Update your evidence. Get fresh letters from your GP, consultant, or therapist describing your current situation. Evidence from 3 years ago is too old.

3. Describe any worsening. If your condition has deteriorated, new symptoms have appeared, or you need more help than before, say so clearly. The review is an opportunity to increase your award.

4. Don't assume they'll keep your award. Reviews can result in the same award, an increase, a decrease, or removal. Treat it as seriously as a new claim.

What If My Award Goes Down?

If your review results in a lower award or no award, you can request a Mandatory Reconsideration within 1 month. If your condition has not improved, a decrease is hard for the DWP to justify. Include evidence showing your condition is the same or worse.

Don't miss the deadline: You usually have 1 month to return the review form. If you need more time, call 0800 121 4433 and request an extension BEFORE the deadline passes. They do grant extensions.

Can My Award Increase at Review?

Yes. If your condition has worsened since your last assessment, you can score higher at review. Some people go from standard to enhanced rate at review. Describe your current difficulties honestly and in detail.
