Can You Get PIP If You Work Full Time?

Updated May 2026 · 7 min read · By PIPexpert

Yes, absolutely. PIP has nothing to do with whether you work, how much you earn, or how many hours you do. It is not means-tested. You could earn £100,000 a year and still qualify for PIP if your condition affects your daily living or mobility.

Why PIP Is Not About Work

PIP assesses how your condition affects 12 daily activities like cooking, washing, dressing, communicating, and moving around. It does not assess your ability to work. Many people work full time while struggling enormously at home - forcing themselves through work and then collapsing when they get home, unable to cook, shower, or function.

Working does not mean you are "fine." It means you are pushing through. The DWP should be assessing what happens when you are NOT at work - can you cook when you get home? Can you shower without help? Can you manage your medication? That is what PIP measures.

But Won't the Assessor Use My Job Against Me?

Some assessors do try to argue that if you can work, you can do daily activities. This is wrong and can be challenged. Work involves different physical and cognitive demands than cooking, washing, or dressing. Sitting at a desk for 8 hours does not mean you can stand at a cooker for 30 minutes.

If an assessor mentions your work, your response should be: "My employment involves [specific tasks] in a controlled environment with [adjustments]. PIP activities like preparing food, washing, and dressing require different physical abilities which my condition prevents me from doing safely and reliably."

What If I Have Adjustments at Work?

Workplace adjustments actually SUPPORT your PIP claim. If your employer has provided a special chair, reduced hours, work from home, modified duties, or any other adjustments, this is evidence that your condition is significant enough to require accommodation. Mention these on your PIP form.

What If I've Had to Reduce My Hours?

If you've gone from full time to part time, or changed roles because of your condition, this is powerful evidence. It shows your condition is worsening and affecting your ability to function. Describe the timeline of changes on your form.

What About Driving to Work?

Driving does not disqualify you from PIP mobility either. You can drive and still score on mobility. The mobility component assesses walking distance and ability to plan journeys, not whether you can drive. Many people drive because they CANNOT walk far enough to use public transport.

Key point: PIP is worth up to £10,119 per year on top of your salary. There is no earnings limit. If your condition affects your daily life, you should claim regardless of your employment status.

Common Situations

"I work but can't cook when I get home" - This affects Activity 1 (Preparing Food). Describe the contrast: what you manage at work vs what you cannot do at home.

"I work from home because I can't leave the house" - This affects Activities 11 and 12 (Planning Journeys and Moving Around), plus Activity 9 (Engaging with People).

"I work but need my partner to help me shower and dress" - This affects Activities 4 and 6. Your ability to sit at a desk has nothing to do with your ability to wash and dress.

"I work but I'm on strong medication" - Medication side effects (drowsiness, brain fog, nausea) affect multiple PIP activities and count towards your score. The fact you work DESPITE these side effects shows determination, not wellness.
