How much PIP you receive depends on two things: your daily living score and your mobility score. Each component has two rates - standard and enhanced. You might get one component, both, or neither. Here's exactly how the money works.
PIP Rates 2026/27
Daily Living Component
Standard rate: £73.90 per week (£3,842.80 per year) - if you score 8-11 points on daily living activities
Enhanced rate: £110.40 per week (£5,740.80 per year) - if you score 12 or more points on daily living activities
Mobility Component
Standard rate: £29.20 per week (£1,518.40 per year) - if you score 8-11 points on mobility activities
Enhanced rate: £77.05 per week (£4,006.60 per year) - if you score 12 or more points on mobility activities
Maximum and Minimum Awards
Maximum: Enhanced daily living + Enhanced mobility = £187.45 per week = £9,747.40 per year
Most common award: Enhanced daily living + Standard mobility = £139.60 per week = £7,259.20 per year
Minimum: Standard daily living only = £73.90 per week = £3,842.80 per year
How Points Translate to Money
The points system works like this: each of the 12 PIP activities is scored using descriptors worth 0-12 points. Only your highest-scoring descriptor for each activity counts. Your daily living points are totalled from 10 activities, and mobility points from 2 activities.
0-7 daily living points = no daily living component
8-11 daily living points = standard rate (£73.90/week)
12+ daily living points = enhanced rate (£110.40/week)
0-7 mobility points = no mobility component
8-11 mobility points = standard rate (£29.20/week)
12+ mobility points = enhanced rate (£77.05/week)
What Difference Does Enhanced vs Standard Make?
Beyond the obvious money difference, the rate you receive unlocks different things:
Enhanced mobility qualifies you for a Motability car and automatic Blue Badge. Standard mobility doesn't qualify for Motability.
Standard or enhanced daily living qualifies your carer for Carer's Allowance.
Any PIP can increase your Universal Credit, provide council tax reductions, and unlock other benefits.
The 2026 Four-Point Rule
From November 2026, new claimants need to score at least 4 points in a single daily living activity (not just 8 total). This means you need at least one "anchor activity" where you score 4+ points. Check the 2026 changes guide for full details.
How Are You Paid?
PIP is paid every 4 weeks directly into your bank account. It's tax-free, not means-tested, and doesn't affect most other benefits. If you're awarded PIP, you also receive a back payment covering the period from your claim date to the decision date.
Frequently Asked Questions
I scored 7 points. Am I just one point away?
Yes, and the reliability criteria might push you over. For each activity where you scored, check: can you do it SAFELY? REPEATEDLY through the day? To an ACCEPTABLE STANDARD? In a REASONABLE TIME? If not, the descriptor should be higher. Request a Mandatory Reconsideration focusing on reliability.
Can my PIP rate change at review?
Yes - up or down. If your condition has worsened, request a higher rate at review. If the DWP reduces your rate, challenge it immediately. Prepare for reviews with the same thoroughness as your original claim.
