PIP and Blue Badge - Do You Automatically Qualify?

A Blue Badge lets you park closer to where you need to go - in disabled bays, on double yellow lines, and free in many council car parks. If you have PIP, you may qualify automatically or through a further assessment.

Automatic Blue Badge with PIP

You automatically qualify for a Blue Badge if you score 8 points or more on the "Moving Around" activity (Activity 12) of PIP. This means you received at least the standard rate of the mobility component specifically through moving around difficulties.

You also automatically qualify if you receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component through any combination of mobility descriptors.

What If I Only Get Daily Living?

PIP daily living on its own does not automatically qualify you for a Blue Badge. However, you can still apply through a further assessment with your local council. Many councils will consider applications from people with conditions that cause severe difficulty walking even if their PIP mobility score is lower.

Conditions that often qualify through further assessment include severe anxiety or cognitive conditions that make navigating journeys dangerous, breathing conditions that limit walking distance, and conditions causing severe pain when walking.

How to Apply

Apply through your local council - most councils have an online application form. You'll need your PIP award letter and your National Insurance number. If you automatically qualify based on your PIP mobility score, the process is straightforward. If you need a further assessment, the council may ask for additional medical evidence.

Blue Badges are free in England and cost £20 in Scotland and Wales. They last 3 years.

Can I Get a Blue Badge Without PIP?

Yes. You don't need PIP to get a Blue Badge. People who receive War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, those registered blind, and people with severe upper limb disabilities who drive regularly can also qualify. Councils can also grant badges based on their own assessment of walking difficulty.
