PIP Back Payment - How Long Does It Take and How Much Will You Get?

Updated May 2026 · 7 min read

When you're awarded PIP, you receive a back payment covering the period from when you first claimed until the decision was made. Given that PIP claims currently take an average of 20 weeks to process, this lump sum can be substantial - often £2,000 to £5,000 or more.

How Is Your Back Payment Calculated?

PIP is payable from the date you made your claim (usually the date of your initial phone call to the DWP) plus a 3-month qualifying period for new claimants. If you're transferring from DLA or making a subsequent claim, the qualifying period may not apply.

Your back payment is calculated as: your weekly PIP rate multiplied by the number of weeks between your qualifying date and your decision date.

Example: If you're awarded enhanced daily living (£110.40/week) and the decision took 20 weeks after your qualifying period, your back payment would be around £2,208.

When Will You Receive It?

Back payments are usually paid within 2 weeks of your decision. They arrive as a single lump sum into the same bank account as your ongoing PIP payments. Some people receive it within days of the decision letter.

Back Payment After Mandatory Reconsideration or Tribunal

If you won your PIP through an MR or tribunal, your back payment covers the entire period from your original claim date. This can be a very large lump sum. If your claim has been running for a year or more through the appeals process, you could receive £5,000 to £10,000+ in arrears.

Important: PIP back payments are not counted as income for Universal Credit or other means-tested benefits. However, if the lump sum pushes your savings above £6,000, it could affect your UC. Seek advice from Citizens Advice if you're concerned.

What If Your Back Payment Is Wrong?

Check the dates carefully on your award letter. Your back payment should cover from your claim date (plus any qualifying period) to the decision date at the correct weekly rate. If the amount seems wrong, call the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433 and ask them to break down the calculation.

Can PIP Be Backdated Further?

PIP cannot normally be backdated before your claim date. Unlike some benefits, you cannot claim PIP retrospectively for a period before you contacted the DWP. This is why it's important to make the initial phone call as soon as possible - even if you're not ready to fill in the form yet.
