Which Activities Does Carpal Tunnel Affect?
Preparing Food (Activity 1) - Numbness and weakness in hands making gripping knives dangerous. Dropping pans and utensils due to loss of grip strength. Pain when chopping, stirring, or lifting. If you cannot safely grip a pan of boiling water, this is a genuine safety risk.
Washing and Bathing (Activity 4) - Difficulty gripping soap, shampoo bottles, flannels. Pain when wringing out cloths. Weakness making it hard to wash hair thoroughly.
Dressing and Undressing (Activity 6) - Numbness making buttons, zips, and fasteners extremely difficult, especially in the morning when symptoms are worst. Difficulty tying shoelaces. Need for adapted clothing.
Managing Therapy (Activity 3) - Wrist splints (wearing and managing), medication, hand exercises, physiotherapy, potential surgery and recovery. Night splints disrupting sleep, causing daytime fatigue.
Communicating Verbally (Activity 7) - If CTS affects your ability to use a phone (gripping, holding to ear) or write, this can be relevant.
Making Budgeting Decisions (Activity 10) - If pain and numbness prevent you from writing cheques, handling coins, or using a computer for banking.
Night Symptoms and Fatigue
CTS typically worsens at night, waking you with pain and numbness. The resulting sleep deprivation causes daytime fatigue that affects every activity. Morning stiffness and numbness means the first hours of the day are your worst - describe this pattern on your form.
