PIP is backdated to the date you first called to start your claim - not the date of the decision. This means if it takes 4 months from your phone call to getting a decision, you will receive a lump sum covering those 4 months as a backpayment.
How Backdating Works
When you call 0800 121 4433 to start your PIP claim, the DWP records the date. This becomes your "date of claim." If your claim is successful, your PIP payments start from this date. The backpayment is usually paid as a lump sum within 2-4 weeks of the decision.
How Much Could Your Backpayment Be?
This depends on what rate you are awarded and how long the process took:
- 3 months wait, standard daily living: ~£945 backpayment
- 4 months wait, enhanced both: ~£3,194 backpayment
- 6 months wait, enhanced both: ~£4,791 backpayment
Tribunal Backdating
If you win at tribunal, the backdating goes back to your original date of claim - which could be 12-18 months ago or more. Tribunal backpayments can be thousands of pounds. This is one of the biggest reasons to keep going with an appeal even when the process is slow.
Can I Claim for a Period Before I Applied?
Generally no. PIP cannot be backdated to before the date you called to start the claim. There is no provision for late claims in the same way as some other benefits. The exception is if you can show "good cause" for a late claim, but this is very rare and difficult to prove.
DWP Overpayment Deductions
If you owe the DWP money from a previous overpayment, they can deduct from your PIP backpayment. Contact the DWP Debt Management team on 0800 916 0647 to check if you have any outstanding debts before your backpayment arrives.
