PIP for Incontinence (Bladder & Bowel) - Can You Claim? Guide 2026

Updated May 2026 · 7 min read · By PIPexpert

Incontinence, whether urinary, bowel, or both, can be severely disabling and deeply embarrassing. Many people don't claim PIP for incontinence because they're too ashamed to describe it on a form. But incontinence directly affects multiple PIP activities and can score significant points. You need to be honest and specific, even though it's uncomfortable.

Which Activities Does Incontinence Affect?

Managing Toilet Needs (Activity 5) - This is the primary activity. If you need pads, catheters, stoma bags, or other aids to manage incontinence, that scores at least 2 points. If you need help from another person to manage toileting (cleaning, changing pads, catheter care, stoma management), that scores higher. Be specific about frequency, urgency, and what happens during accidents.

Washing and Bathing (Activity 4) - Need for additional washing after accidents. Skin care requirements in affected areas. If incontinence means you need to wash more frequently or need help cleaning yourself, this scores.

Dressing and Undressing (Activity 6) - Need to change clothing after accidents. Managing incontinence pads and products. Adapted clothing for quick access.

Preparing Food (Activity 1) - Urgency meaning you cannot stay in the kitchen long enough to complete cooking. Need to be near a toilet at all times interrupting activities.

Engaging with People (Activity 9) - Often the highest-scoring activity alongside toilet needs. Embarrassment causing complete social withdrawal. Fear of accidents in public. Avoiding all social situations. Odour concerns preventing social engagement. Depression and anxiety from living with incontinence. Can score up to 8 points.

Planning and Following Journeys (Activity 11) - Must plan every journey around toilet access. Cannot use public transport due to lack of toilet access. Cannot travel without knowing exact toilet locations. Fear of accidents limiting willingness to leave the house at all.

Moving Around (Activity 12) - If urgency means you cannot walk far without needing a toilet, this affects mobility scoring.

Be Specific and Honest

This is the most difficult section to write for most people. But vague descriptions like "I have bladder problems" will score 0. You need to write: "I experience urinary incontinence approximately 3-4 times per day. I wear incontinence pads which I need to change every 2-3 hours. I have accidents at least twice per week where pads are insufficient. I need to wash and change all clothing after these accidents. I avoid all social situations due to fear of odour and visible accidents."
