Dyslexia on its own rarely scores enough for PIP unless it's severe. But dyslexia combined with co-existing conditions - anxiety, depression, ADHD, or learning disabilities - can score well across multiple activities. The key is describing the functional impact, not just the diagnosis.
Which PIP Activities Does Dyslexia Affect?
Reading and Understanding Signs, Symbols and Words (Activity 8) - This is the most directly affected activity. If you cannot read and understand a short piece of written text without help, you score points. Dyslexia that prevents you from reading appointment letters, medication labels, road signs, or official forms is PIP-relevant. If you need someone to read and explain written information, this scores 2-8 points.
Making Budgeting Decisions (Activity 10) - Many people with dyslexia struggle with numbers as well as words (dyscalculia often co-exists). If you cannot calculate change, understand a bank statement, pay bills, or manage a household budget without help, this scores 2-6 points.
Communicating Verbally (Activity 7) - While dyslexia primarily affects written language, severe dyslexia can affect verbal communication too - word-finding difficulties, losing track of conversations, struggling to express complex thoughts. If you need someone to help you communicate, this scores.
Managing Therapy (Activity 3) - If you cannot read medication labels, understand dosage instructions, or follow written treatment plans without help, this affects your ability to manage your own therapy.
Planning and Following Journeys (Activity 11) - Cannot read road signs, bus timetables, or map directions. If you get lost because you can't read signs or follow written directions, this scores on mobility.
The "But Everyone Has a Bit of Dyslexia" Problem
Assessors sometimes minimise dyslexia. Challenge this by being specific about what you cannot do. Don't say "I find reading difficult." Say: "I cannot read a letter from the DWP without my partner reading it to me. I cannot read medication labels. Last month I took the wrong dose of my medication because I misread the instructions. I cannot read a bus timetable or follow written directions."
Dyslexia with Other Conditions
If you also have anxiety about reading situations, depression from struggling at school or work, or ADHD affecting concentration, claim for ALL conditions together. The combined impact across activities is much higher than dyslexia alone. Many people with severe dyslexia have developed significant anxiety around written tasks - this is a separate, claimable condition.
Frequently Asked Questions
I wasn't diagnosed until adulthood. Does that matter?
No. A recent diagnosis is just as valid as a childhood one. Many adults with dyslexia developed coping strategies that masked their difficulties in school. An educational psychologist assessment as an adult provides the same evidence as a childhood diagnosis.
I can read slowly. Does that count?
If reading takes you significantly longer than a non-disabled person and this affects daily functioning (reading letters, medication labels, forms, signs), you fail the "reasonable time" criterion under PIP. Taking 30 minutes to read a one-page letter that most people read in 2 minutes IS a disability.
